FM Linkevičius: Free Media, Journalist Security and the Fight against Propaganda - Priority Items in Our Political Agenda

On February 2, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović discussed imminent threats of propaganda and premeditated disinformation, and the need to strengthen independent and fair media, which was especially relevant in today’s context of ongoing events in the EU’s eastern neighbours. Later Mijatović spoke at a conference on Propaganda and freedom of expression, which was organized by the Lithuanian Union of Journalists, the Radio and Television Commission of Lithuania, the Ministry of Culture of Lithuania and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. During the event, Mijatović received an award of the Lithuanian Union of Journalists for outstanding merits in journalism and for her significant contribution to freedom of expression around the world. Lithuanians Are Particularly Positive towards NATO Allies, Polls Suggest

Citizens of Lithuania have a very positive attitude towards NATO, support sending Lithuanian troops abroad on international operations, and back the increase of defence budget. These observations are based on a public opinion poll commissioned by the Ministry of National Defence and carried out in December 2015 by public opinion polling company RAIT. According to the opinion poll, roughly 81% support or fully support Lithuania’s NATO membership. Roughly 82% of the citizens speak in support or fully support permanent presence of NATO allies on the territory of Lithuania. According to the survey, 72% of the Lithuanian population feel that NATO should send in more personnel and equipment to Lithuania. Two thirds of the population of Lithuania (approx. 67% of the respondents) approve or fully approve the need to increase defence spending to 2% of GDP. More.

NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence Transfers a Hybrid Power Generation System to the Lithuanian Armed Forces

On 4 February, the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence introduced and formally transferred Deployable Modular Hybrid Power Generation and Management System to the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The new and unique system among the members of the Alliance utilises both, renewable energy sources and conventional fuel. The new-generation Hybrid Power Generation System will be used during a range of multinational exercises. More.

Lithuania Climbs Again in Index of Economic Freedom

Lithuania has cemented its position as one of the world’s freest economies by climbing two places to 13th globally in the Index of Economic Freedom. The index, a guide published annually by the Wall Street Journal and US think tank the Heritage foundation, ranks countries using a range of criteria. These include trade freedom, private property rights, freedom from corruption, efficiency and transparency in governmental spending, and labour market flexibility. Lithuania’s overall score in the index is now 75.2, its highest ever and well above the European average of 66.9. More.

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Appoints Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla As Music Director

The Lithuanian woman who succeeds Andris Nelsons in Birmingham wins acclaim for energy and ‘rare talent’. The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra revealed who has been chosen to replace Andris Nelsons as Music Director on 4 February. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla will be the CBSO’s 12th chief conductor with effect from September 2016, for an initial three-year period.The 29-year-old Lithuanian made her debut with the orchestra in July 2015 and so impressed musicians, management and audiences alike that she was asked to return in January to conduct a specially arranged concert.
